What to Expect at Your XERF Session: Comfort, Timing, Sessions and Results
Considering XERF in Weston? Exactly what happens before, during and after a session: comfort, timing, how many sessions and when results show.
You have read about XERF, maybe seen it on Instagram, and now you want the practical version. What actually happens when you arrive? Does it hurt? How long does it take? When will you see something in the mirror? This guide walks through a XERF skin tightening plan at Body Lounge Med Spa in Weston from the first conversation to the weeks after your last session, with no surprises.
What is XERF, in one paragraph?
XERF is a non-invasive skin tightening treatment made by Cynosure Lutronic and cleared by the FDA. It uses monopolar radiofrequency, a form of controlled heat, to reach the deeper layers of the skin where collagen and elastin live. What makes it different is that it delivers two frequencies in a single pulse, so the energy works at shallow, middle and deep levels at the same time, while a cooling system keeps the surface comfortable. No needles, no numbing cream, no downtime. It is used on the face and neck: cheeks, jawline, the appearance of jowls and the skin under the chin.
Step 1: The consultation
Every XERF plan at Body Lounge starts with a complimentary consultation, and it is never rushed. We look at the skin on your face and neck under good light, ask what bothers you when you look in the mirror, and check for anything that would rule the treatment out. XERF is not suitable during pregnancy, or if you have a pacemaker or metal implants in the treatment area. If you have had fillers, Botox or other treatments recently, tell us, so we can space things correctly.
This is also where we decide together how many sessions make sense and which areas to treat. Most plans are two to four sessions, spaced about a month apart. Two people with the same age can need different plans, because skin thickness, sun history and how much looseness is present all matter. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that non-surgical tightening works best on mild to moderate looseness, and we will tell you honestly if that describes your skin or not.
You will leave with a clear plan, a price for that plan and, if helpful, a payment plan option through Cherry that splits the cost into smaller monthly amounts. The consultation is available in English or Spanish.
Step 2: How to prepare for your session
Preparation is simple. Arrive with clean skin, no makeup on the areas being treated, and skip heavy creams that morning. Avoid a sunburn in the week before your session, since treating freshly sunburned skin is uncomfortable and we may need to reschedule. Drink water as you normally would. There is no fasting, no medication to stop and no numbing cream to apply at home.
If you wear jewelry on your ears or neck, you will be asked to remove it, because radiofrequency and metal do not mix. Bring your glasses if you need them for reading the paperwork, and that is about it.
Step 3: What the session feels like
A face and neck session takes about 45 minutes. Time varies with the areas treated. You lie back comfortably, your provider applies a thin layer of gel and then glides the handpiece over the treatment area in a pattern that covers each zone evenly.
What you feel is warmth. The device’s Wave Fit pulse balances energy with cooling, and the integrated cryogen delivery keeps the surface of your skin comfortable while the energy reaches the deeper layers. That is why no numbing is needed. Some spots, such as along the jawline where the skin is closer to bone, feel warmer than others. Your provider watches real-time feedback from the device and can adjust the intensity, so if anything feels too warm, you simply say so. Most clients describe the sensation as a warm massage rather than a treatment.
You can talk during the session. Many people close their eyes and rest.
Step 4: Right after the session
You get up, wipe off the gel and go. There is no recovery room and no bandages. Your skin may look slightly pink for a short time, similar to how it looks after a brisk walk, and that usually fades within an hour or two. The Cleveland Clinic notes that mild redness or swelling after radiofrequency treatments typically resolves within a day.
Most people also notice that their skin feels tighter right away. That immediate feeling comes from the heat’s effect on existing collagen. The longer lasting change comes later, and it is important to understand the difference so you do not judge the treatment on day one.
You can put on makeup, go back to work or head to dinner. We suggest avoiding a hot yoga class, sauna or direct sun for the rest of that day, and using sunscreen the next morning as you always should.
Step 5: The weeks after
This is where XERF does most of its work. Over the following weeks, your body responds to the treatment by rebuilding collagen and elastin at the depths that were warmed. The look of firmness builds gradually over four to twelve weeks and continues to develop with each session in your plan. The AAD describes the same pattern for radiofrequency tightening in general: an immediate tightening sensation, then results that develop over the following months as collagen forms.
This gradual timeline is a feature, not a flaw. Because the change builds slowly, it looks natural. Friends tend to say you look rested rather than asking what you had done. That fits how we think about aesthetics at Body Lounge: a quieter kind of transformation.
Between sessions there is nothing special to do beyond good skincare and sun protection. A medical facial between XERF sessions can help maintain skin health, and your provider can suggest timing.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually two to four, spaced about a month apart. The number depends on your skin, your goals and how your skin responds to the first session. Some people are happy after two. Others with more looseness benefit from a third or fourth. We set the plan at the consultation and revisit it as we go. You are never locked into more sessions than you need.
When will I see results?
Expect three moments. Immediately after the session, skin often feels tighter. Around four to six weeks, the look of firmness starts to become visible, especially along the jawline and under the chin. Between eight and twelve weeks after each session, the change is more established as collagen matures. Results continue to build with each session in the plan. Individual results vary, and XERF does not produce a surgical result. It may help skin look firmer and more defined; it does not change facial structure.
How long do results last?
Sources such as the Cleveland Clinic report that results from radiofrequency skin tightening can last one to three years with good skincare, though this varies with age, sun exposure, weight changes and lifestyle. Many clients choose a maintenance session once or twice a year to keep the look going. We will talk about that when you finish your plan, not before.
Can I do XERF if I am losing weight?
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people ask about it. Losing weight, including with medical support such as Tirzepatide, can leave the skin on the face and neck looking less firm than the rest of you feels. XERF is often timed once weight has stabilized so the results reflect your new shape. If you are mid-journey, we can plan the timing together. Our post on loose skin after weight loss covers the body side of that conversation.
Can I combine XERF with Botox or fillers?
Often, yes. Botox softens lines caused by muscle movement, fillers restore volume, and XERF works on firmness. They address different things and are often combined over the course of a year. Your provider will sequence and space them so each one gets to do its job.
Quick checklist before you book
